What is Prescription Drug Addiction

What is prescription drug addiction

Most individuals who take prescription medications don’t have trouble stopping them when they are no longer medically necessary. However, for some individuals the process of quitting a medication that has pleasurable effects can become a nightmare. You may believe yourself to be a weak minded person if you can’t stop using a legally prescribed medication or feel that somehow you were born lacking the internal resources needed to cope with what are considered by others to be normal life stressors. Perhaps others have suggested that if you truly wanted to stop taking the drug you would simply do so. In addition to dealing with your own emotions, beliefs and judgments about yourself along with those of others, you are also struggling with symptoms associated with substance addiction and dependence. Embarrassment and shame may lead you to stay away from others who don’t understand just how difficult the battle you are fighting has become. There are a number of other symptoms that are characteristic of prescription drug abuse including:

  • Impaired judgment and decision making abilities
  • Using more of the medication than what was prescribed by the physician
  • Obtaining prescriptions from multiple healthcare providers
  • Intense mood swings, involving being excessively upbeat, happy or elated, or being irritable hostile, aggressive or displaying anger outbursts
  • Repeatedly reporting lost or stolen prescriptions to obtain additional prescriptions

Added together all these factors and symptoms can lead to an enormous amount of distress and suffering, subsequently leading to feelings of hopelessness regarding the possibility of anything improving in the future. At our prescription drug abuse treatment center near in Tukwila near Seattle, we understand how difficult it can be to fight an addiction especially when the substance involved is legally prescribed. You don’t have to do this alone. Our compassionate, supportive, experienced staff are here to help.

Why Seek Treatment for Prescription Drug Abuse

Why seek treatment for prescription drug addiction at Cascade

If you are like others who have a prescription drug addiction, you likely feel as if there’s something wrong with you since most people are under the mistaken assumption you can’t become addicted to a legally prescribed medication. You may feel as if the drug rules your life and that you have no control over it or that your life is filled with chaos and unpredictability. Despite being well aware of these negative conditions you may find it seems impossible to even consider no longer using the medication due to fear of withdrawal symptoms you may perceive as intolerable.

Perhaps you feel as if you have become emotionally numb and can’t seem to experience good or bad feelings anymore. This may be associated with a lack of motivation and lowered productivity at your job or in school. Perhaps you feel plagued by an increasing financial burden related to expenses associated with your drug use or lost time at work. You may even have begun using an illegal drug due to the need to replace a medication to which you no longer have access. Effects of your addiction may have caused your relationships to have suffered to the point you feel alone and socially isolated even from those to whom you were once closest.

Treatment for Prescription Drug Abuse

Treatment at Cascade Behavioral Health Hospital for prescription drug addiction

Given the large number of prescription drugs that can lead to an addiction, the specific approach to treatment will depend somewhat on the medication, though most approaches include similar modalities. At Cascade we use various techniques delivered in different configurations all of which emphasize learning new information and skills to help you begin your recovery.

After a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms, potential co-occurring conditions and individual characteristics, your treatment team will work collaboratively with you to design the best individualized intervention plan. If detoxification is necessary, we will help you rid your body of the substance in as humane a manner as possible. To this end, medication may be used to combat any negative symptoms that result from the detox process. After your system has been completely cleansed of the toxic substance, your treatment team may discuss the possibility of placing you on a Vivitrol or Suboxone protocol, which sometimes are used to help those with alcohol or opioid addictions to maintain sobriety.

Studies have indicated that the most successful form of treatment for substance abuse is group therapy. At our treatment center for prescription drug abuse we utilize both educational/skills groups and process oriented groups which allow you to work on issues with peers who have similar difficulties.

Family relationships often are seriously damaged when an addiction develops in one of the members. At our prescription drug abuse treatment center we feel it is crucial to include your family and close friends in your treatment to help address any conflicts that may have alienated members from one another.

We also offer individual therapy at our hospital to allow you to discuss issues you prefer not to raise in a group setting and to allot time dedicated to focus on you and your individual specific problems exclusively.

Techniques we use come from several models of therapy. These include:

12-Step Programs – This is the primary approach behind all the therapeutic approaches we use.

Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) – MET addresses any ambivalence you may be experiencing regarding engaging in therapy and increasing internal motivation to set and meet goals.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – Using this method you will learn to identify irrational thoughts associated with your substance use and replace them with more adaptive thoughts resulting in the alteration of your emotions and behaviors as well.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) – DBT balances acceptance of prior events which can’t be changed in order to neutralize their effects on your current life, with emotional regulation skills and increased tolerance for uncontrollable emotions.

We also offer experiential interventions permitting you to approach your rehab in a variety of ways. These may include:

  • Acupuncture
  • Medication
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Exercise programs
  • A.A. and N.A. meetings

Continuing Care

Continuing care – what comes next?

We are dedicated to continuing care and have created step down programs for you to move into when ready. Each program is based on the same philosophy and intervention approach as our inpatient program. Your primary case manager from prior programs attended will stay in contact with you throughout your entire treatment course. We feel that by ensuring a sense of consistency and familiarity it helps increase the ease of transition from one program to another. We have an Intensive Outpatient Treatment program available which has similar services to what is provided in our inpatient program though at a lower intensity for those ready to begin re-integrating into their community. We also have an outpatient program for those further along in their rehab process who need less frequent services.
